IT has become clear that the voters in the stretch of North Ayrshire from West Kilbride up to Skelmorlie, including Cumbrae won a narrow 'No' vote.

In response to the question asked, Should Scotland be an Independent Country?, the total number of valid votes given for each decision in the North Ayrshire area was: Yes 47,072 and No 49,016 The total number of votes cast was 96,173.

The total number of rejected ballot papers was 85.

Largs & Millport Weekly News editor Drew Cochrane said: "The localised votes are revealing that because the north coast and Cumbrae voted almost 60 per cent to 40 per cent against independence it swung the vote overall in North Ayrshire district to a slender 2 per cent victory for No Thanks.

"Places like Saltcoats, Stevenston and Irvine went for Yes."
