A YOUNG Largs theatre director and playwright is in demand at present.

Andrew McGregor who became a dad for the first time this summer had his musical “Towards the Moon” performed Off Broadway last year after a group from New York saw it at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Andy, whose parents are Allister and Kate McGregor of Largs, told the ‘News:’ “We are currently working towards getting it developed for a full scale production in Scotland, most probably with the Beacon in Greenock. It was nominated for three Musical Theatre Matters awards at the Fringe and it has also been showcased at the Citizens (Glasgow).” Andrew who also teaches at the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow added: “I’ve got a few things on the go just now. I am assistant director on The National Theatre of Scotland’s production of ‘In Time O’ Strife’ which shall be touring the country soon (including the Ayr Gaiety for a couple of nights).” Having been back in Largs this year assisting fellow professional director Maggie Grant Kinloch on the Largs Players’ production of ‘The Cheviot, The Stag And The Black, Black Oil’ he will next turn his attention to making a Christmas show for children at the Citizens Theatre called “Eric the Elf’s Chaotic Christmas” - which he will be writing, directing and composing.

Next year, his own theatre company “Sleeping Warrior” receives funding from Creative Scotland to tour his comedy play ‘Love 2.0’ around Scotland. It’s a play about Facebook and how it makes dating for young people even harder than before as the virtual person you know can be quite different from the actual person.

He explained: “We turn all the virtual things you do on Facebook into real life - writing on people’s walls, poking them, sharing your holiday pics with random strangers - it’s really good fun and the two actors won the comedy award at the Conservatoire after their performances in it as we were developing it.” He will co-produce it at the Beacon, as well as the Tron in Glasgow and hopes it will tour far and wide. Sleeping Warrior are on Facebook and at www.sleepingwarriortheatre.com and his own website which has links to songs from Towards the Moon and other things is www.andyrmcgregor.com
