Severe flooding north of Largs resulted in a nightmare journey for commuters on Tuesday morning.

Heavy rainfall overnight resulted in various difficulties for drivers heading through Skelmorlie, Wemyss Bay and Inverkip as rush hour approached.

Matters were compounded by long tailbacks, and chaotic scenes in Greenock, including road closures, as motorists faced long waits to get to their work.

Wemyss Bay at bridge was badly affected, and a culvert had burst on Spey Road, Inverkip, resulting in various deluges.

There was reported flooding on Shore Road at Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay, and at old Inverkip power station area, including in some in unlit areas, making it hazardous early in the morning.

On the morning, Katie Hope messaged on Facebook: “A van has broken down just at Bankfoot roundabout, and the traffic heading towards Greenock is horrendous! I am sat on the IBM road, and am not even going to attempt the drive through the massive flooding!” There were rolling updates on social media as the problems continued. Natalie Thorburn said: “For those commuting, there is major flooding in the dip at IBM, and also deep flooding on the bend as you come into Inverkip from Greenock - this one involves going onto other side of road to avoid, taking a while to get through.” An angry Alison Masterson of Inverkip fumed: “There are still drivers who don’t slow down going through floods!” Trains between Wemyss Bay and Glasgow were also cancelled through most of Tuesday due to the flooding problems, as replacement bus services were put on.

The weather was quite a contrast to the Isle of Cumbrae on Monday which got a special mention by Sean Batty on the STV weather for its low rainfall over the weekend. Millport only 28mm of rain at weekend, which was compared to 152mm at Tyndrum.

And last Tuesday, the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo hit the local area, with high winds buffeting the coastline, resulting in the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Largs to Cumbrae being cancelled all day. It also prompted amateur photographers such as Caroline Le Good Morgan to take some snaps of the high gusts along the Largs shore.

She said: “It was very gusty throughout the day-it lost it’s hurricane status after it wreaked havoc in Bermuda last week and arrived on our shore as gale force winds which were damaging in certain areas- a woman was killed in London when a tree toppled and I’m sure there were other areas which sustained some damage. I’m guessing we got off pretty lightly in Largs this time with just the Cal Mac service suspended for most of the day.”
