Never mind Twitter, but a little bird has told the ‘News’ about the surprising ‘tail’ of a goldcrest’s collision with a house window near Routenburn.

Our informant tweeted: “This wee dude flew into the window by mistake the other day, but he flew off after ten minutes. He might need an Anadin in the morning though!

“Apparently it is a goldcrest, which is the smallest bird in the UK.” The goldcrest is widespread and common across the whole of the Britain. In autumn, despite their small size, large numbers arrive on the east coast from Scandinavia, having journeyed hundreds of miles across the sea.

Hopefully, the surprise visitor to Routenburn will not be put off from returning to Largs again in future!

The goldcrest is only nine centimetres in length, has a 14-15 cm wingspan and a weight of 5–7g.
