Singapore finished top of the medals table in the Commonwealth Fencing to complete a superb swashbuckling week at Inverclyde Sports Centre.

The fast and dynamic sporting discipline captivated the crowds throughout the week, as England finished second, and Scotland recorded a best ever placing of third place.

In the closing ceremony, President of Scottish Fencing Chris Hyde said: “It has been an amazing six days at Inverclyde Sports Centre - we have had 300 athletes and 20 countries competing in some extraordinary fencing. What was particularly pleasing to see was the success of countries who have rarely won in the past including Singapore, Jamaica and South Africa. It was also pleasing to see England, Canada and Australia do so well, and of course, our host nation, Scotland, who had their most successful ever Commonwealth Fencing championships ever with six individual medals, five team and three amazing golds - well done Scotland.

“It has been a pleasure to be part of Homecoming Scotland. I’d like to thank Commonwealth Games Scotland, and the Commonwealth Federation for their support, and I am highly grateful to North Ayrshire Council for the wonderful reception at the start of this event.

“I would also like to thank the SLS company who provided the lighting with many people telling me that it was the finest ever lighting used in our support. There was also huge success in our live broadcasts which have been going out online. We had 100,000 views from around 80 countries around the world which was well beyond our expectations and raised the bar of what can be achieved in terms of broadcasting. I would alo like to thank the management team who delivered this event, fencers, coaches and team managers -the fencing was at an incredible level and produced so many memorable moments, and I am very proud to be involved in this great sport.” Australian Helen Smith, President of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation, praised the sporting spectacular which reached ‘new heights’. She said: “The Commonwealth Fencing in Largs has been a remarkable success. Since 2010, there has been a significant increase in the number of fencers and participating countries, and that is a positive sign of the growth and development of the sport with sven new countries having won a medal or medals, and this will help us in our bid to re-enter fencing in the Commonwealth Games proper.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce first time ever Singapore topped the medal tally - well done.

“An event such as this is not possible without dedicated and professional efforts of many volunteers who have carried out myriad of tasks that are required to host and run an international event like this.” The Commonwealth veterans event also took place at Inverclyde Sports Centre from Sunday until Tuesday of this week.
