Small Business Saturday UK, now in its 3rd year, highlights independently owned businesses and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities.

The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year which traditionally kicks off the Christmas shopping spend, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses in the lead up to Christmas and throughout the year. This year it takes place this Saturday, 6th December and coincides with Yuletide Weekend.

Toni Dawson, owner of Sugar & Spice, has rallied many businesses in Largs to get involved in conjunction with the BID’s ‘Shop Local’ campaign. Toni said, “I found out about this last year and thought this should be something to promote in Largs for this year. It’s so easy for everyone to do all their shopping in supermarkets or out of town shopping centres but the community needs to know the impact that has on their town centre. Independent business owners like myself need supported all year round and what people don’t probably realise is that statistics show that for every £1 spent out of town only 5p circulates locally whereas for every £1 spent locally, 50-70p circulates back into the local economy by way of job creation, our ability to support community events and fundraising activities etc. A shift of only 10% of your spending creates a huge impact in your local area and ensures we can sustain a vibrant town centre and not just another ‘clone’ town. All we ask is that you consider firstly if you can buy what you need locally instead of routinely shopping at the supermarket, in Glasgow or online. You’ll be amazed at what is available in Largs if you just take the time to look around. If you’re out shopping this Saturday, ask the shop owners if they know about it or are offering anything on the day. If you’re on social media you can see what’s available by using the hashtag #ShopInLargs and Like/Follow Explore Largs for more information. Please, ‘Think Local and Shop Local’ this Christmas!”
