The weather bomb might not have been as explosive as it sounds, but it certainly provided plenty of ammunition for amateur photographers to take some excellent pictures.

Dramatic waves crashing off the rocks in front of Largs Pencil were well captured by James McKinlay, receiving well over 100 likes.

James said: “Thanks very much to the Largs News for using my picture for your cover photo on Facebook. I got absolutely soaked taken this but it was worth it in the end!” As well as gusts, the area was treated to spectacular lightning and hailstorms, with one reader describing the size of the hailstones to be anything between the size of a pea and a meatball!

A wintry outlook at Largs Pierhead was photographed by Ian Rutherford.

Inverkip Notes correspondent Alison Masterson said: “Last Wednesday, I’ve not experienced the wind as strong just at the point in Ian’s picture, nearly swept off my feet around 10.30am this morning.” The announcement that pupils at Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay pupils were being sent home at lunchtime in preparation for exceptionally high tides in the Shore Road at Skelmorlie did not go down well with some readers.

Susan Currie remarked: “Schools should have been closed today in the first place!” Tricia Monahan said: “Video footage has been shown on the news in Sydney, Australia - I don’t envy you at all, it looks terrible.” Colin Campbell said: “I am watching this from Borneo (live on the TV) - take care over in Largs.” And Brian Bowden was in admiration of Sky News Scottish correspondent James Matthews who was stationed on Largs Promenade for the duration last week. Brian said: “Watched this chap all day from Vanduara. He certainly earned his money today.” Brian was also impressed that two stalwart Vikings on Largs seafront were mighty enough to put up everything that mother nature could throw at them during last week’s storms.

He said: “Harry and Magnus got a real shower - these Vikings are made of stern stuff!” And a great picture from Ian Dalgleish certainly displayed that as Magnus stood up to the ferocious waves on the esplanade in commanding fashion!
