Largs Community Council have backed the construction of a £2m state-of-the-art crematorium outside Largs , despite apparent conflicts with the local development plan.

Proposals would see the creation of the facility off the A760, near to Blairpark Farm.

Chairman Douglas Blair, referring to road safety issues raised by Fairlie Community Council, said that the road was already used by heavy goods vehicles.

He said: "If it okay for deliveries, then why not a hearse?"

Community councillor Jim Perman pointed out the plans conflicted with a number of policies relating to open space, adding that the site fell under Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park. However, member Ian Murdoch pointed out that Clyde Muirshiel had actually backed the proposals.

Former 'News' editor Drew Cochrane then referred to the allowance made for facilities which are 'essential infrastructure'.

He acknowledged that specific mention of crematoria is not included in the local development plan, but added; "If life and death is not essential, then what is?"

Ian Murdoch agreed with this position and argued that the crematorium was more and more important given the increasing number of older people in the immediate area.

Respect Crematoria's Jeremy Hamilton welcomed Largs Community Council's willingness to engage with him throughout the past year.

"The support of Largs Community Council is very much welcomed and appreciated. Members engaged with us from the early stages of the consultation, and provided important input and insightful feedback, which helped to shape the final plans.

"We are all agreed that this is an important proposal, to provide an essential service for local families at a time when help and assistance is most needed, and we very much appreciate the time, the support and positive input that Largs Community Councillors has provided.
