Both Haylie Brae and the coastal road were closed as storm surge hit Largs and surrounding areas.

On Wednesday evening, the A760 Largs-Kilbirnie road was closed due to snow, and re-opened just after after 8pm. There are heavy puddles on the road, and drivers are urged to take care.

The coastal road between Largs and Skelmorlie re-opened at 9.15am after flooding issues.

There was also some flooding to the back of Largs with an appeal for sandbags from some residents on digital media.

And outside the Kelburn entrance, and Fairlie petrol station were both deluged on Wednesday evening, making it difficult for motorists.

Archie Burleigh said: "I happened to be traveling through Fairlie around 9pm and the stream was a raging torrent and the grill-age had been overwhelmed with leaves and roots. The result was all the stream water was unable to get into the culvert and was overflowing onto the A78 and had caused a flood of approximately 300mm deep across the entire roadway."

"It is patently obvious that the culverts below the A78 and the railway line are not large enough to cope with the volume of water coming from a flash flood such as tonights. It is important that this situation is resolved timeously to ensure that there is no serious damage to property in the future. The reasons for the large volume of water is the fast run off from the adjacent hillsides."

Mr Burleigh has written to both Transport Scotland and North Ayrshire Council in the past week in a bid to resolve the flooding problems which bedevil the A78 Trains remain cancelled until 6pm this evening. A Scotrail spokesman said: ""Where conditions permit, we will run buses to replace trains on these routes. However, be aware other services may be disrupted at short notice due to local weather conditions."
