Two young Largs and Fairlie residents have been elected to the Scottish Youth Parliament.

Emily Aitken of Fairlie and Megan Reid from Largs were elected to represent the views of young constituents in Cunninghame North, with the formal results announced by returning officer Elma Murray.

A total of 14 candidates aged between 14 and 25 stood for both the Cunninghame North and Cunninghame South SYP constituencies - with two seats in each.

They developed their own campaigns and put forward their manifestos, outlining their policies, to prospective young voters.

Young people have been voting since the beginning of the month.

The newest batch of young politicians was announced by Ms Murray, on Friday 13 March.

In their roles as MSYPs, Emily and Megan will take part in local youth forums, consult with their peers on a range of issues, help out with training sessions and lobby senior politicians on things that matter to young people in their constituencies.

Ms Murray, said: “It is fantastic to see so many passionate young people, who all have the drive to make things better for their peers.

“The Scottish Youth Parliament plays an important role in North Ayrshire, providing the council with a clear way to engage with and listen to young people about what matters most to them.

“I am confident our new MSYPs will do a great job in representing North Ayrshire’s young people over the next two years.” North Ayrshire’s Youth Champion, Councillor Ruth Maguire, added: “We have such an active and engaged community of young people here in North Ayrshire and it comes as no surprise to me just how enthusiastic these young folk have been in this democratic process. “I’m really looking forward to working with our new MSYPs and hearing their ideas.”
