Five sailors got into a spot of bother near the Pencil on Sunday afternoon as their 46 foot charter yacht ran aground.

The Largs voluntary lifeboat team were called out at 1.33 by Belfast coastguard to launch immediately to attend the two ladies and three gentlemen on board.

It had been a North West wind in choppy conditions, not far from Largs Yacht Haven, when the crew got into difficulty.

Alasdair Woods of the Largs RNLI said: “The lifeboat was soon on scene at which time the volunteer crew attached a tow line and were able to pull them off into deeper water whereupon the yacht, under her own power, made her way back to the nearby marina under escort of the lifeboat.

“The yacht was immediately lifted out of the water to inspect for any damage.

“Since the crew were fortunately unharmed by the incident the lifeboat returned to station to be made ready for her next service.” * Photo by Christine Marshall.
