Police have praised the public for their help in a drugs bust which netted heroin worth £500 from a Largs property.

The new Inspector at Largs, Joe Conway, has thanked the community for coming forward with valuable information which led to the arrest of a 41-year-old man.

A report is being sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

The police action has been backed by Conservative councillor Tom Marshall, who has helped with tenancy problems in the area. He has urged the public to continue to support the police by coming forward with vital information to help thwart the drug menace which is believed to prevail in the centre of town.

The Inspector has also urged the public to continue providing important information.

Police obtained a warrant from a sheriff which led to the drugs raid at Nelson Street at 12.30pm on 22 April.

A total of 12 grams of heroin was discovered at the scene by officers.

Inspector Conway told the “News”: “The positive thing from our perspective is that people are telling us what is happening, and that information assists us in being able to obtain a warrant in order to search a property.

"We have to carry out a lot of background checks, and we need to have sufficient evidence before we can go to court and obtain a warrant.

“Without that help from the public, it makes it more difficult for us to solve the problems which exist in the area. What makes it pleasing from our own point of view, is that this is an issue which featured in a survey of local householders which caused particular concern.” Councillor Marshall said: “It is very welcome news that Police Scotland have made a significant arrest in Nelson Street, and it is also very welcome that members of the public and residents are willing to come forward and give evidence or information on these matters. We need more cooperation from the public in order to deal with tenancy problems and drug problems in the town centre.” Last year, a crack police unit which deals with gang violence in some parts of Glasgow was brought to Largs to deal with the problems in Nelson Street.

The move followed a deputation of Nelson Street residents to Largs Community Council seeking action.
