A total of 559 gravestones at the Haylie Brae cemetery in Largs have failed a safety inspection, carried out by North Ayrshire Council.

Now, the council have placed stickers on the graves which are considered instable to alert families who are visiting gravestones.

Some of the graves at the Haylie Brae cemetery have been there for many years.

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “We regularly carry out safety inspections on all headstones within our cemeteries. Any memorial which fails our safety inspection is labelled to ensure that visitors to the cemetery are aware the memorial is unsafe. We may also stake and tie the memorial, or lay it flat, if it is considered to be a significant risk. At Haylie Brae Cemetery, Largs, a total of 559 headstones have failed the safety inspection and have therefore been labelled.”
