The seagull menace is also causing a ‘pollution problem’ in a street in Largs, it has been claimed.

Resident Jim Weir has pointed out that the gull problem is not confined to just the town centre and seafront, and something needs to be done to address the issue.

He pointed out that there has been continued problems in recent weeks where he lives due to the nesting gulls, and has asked Cunninghame North MSP Kenneth Gibson to investigate the issue.

Jim Weir said: “They nest and breed on the flat roof of numbers 9-13 Charles Street and have hourly squabbles and air combat up and down lower Charles Street. I have written to the council.

“In light of Drew Cochrane’s comments in his “Personally Speaking” column on 5 August, I thought I would write to you and solicit your support in getting rid of this nuisance.

“I have photos of polluted cars, which is a daily occurrence. Our windows are also regularly bombarded, as are the washing lines.” “Much of the emphasis is on the problem on the seafront but we need support too to get rid of this menace. The nuisance is of noise from dawn to dusk and the filth of their droppings, which may be a health hazard but is definitely pollution, on a grand scale.” After raising his concerns with NAC, the Environmental Health department stated: “The council, at present, does not offer any treatment for the control of gulls or any other birds. The owners of the building would require to engage the services of a private licensed pest control company.”
