Helicopters, coastguard and the RNLI were called out twice over the Bank Holiday weekend to reports of people in the water.

On Saturday morning at 7.32am, a man was reported to be in the water near Millport pier.

A police helicopter provided extra support for officers after a 999 call was made from the island.

Members of the public saw the aircraft land at Mackerston Putting Green in Largs on Saturday morning.

Inspector Joe Conway of Largs Police said: “It was just a bit of minor bother on the island involving the ‘scooterists’. Officers on the island just asked for a bit of assistance. It’s all been sorted and no-one has been arrested.” A spokesman for Largs Lifeboat said: “As the lifeboat arrived, the crew could see a person standing in the water. He was talking with the onshore Cumbrae Coastguard rescue team.

“After a short period, the person walked ashore while the lifeboat stood by.” Belfast Coastguard confirmed that an ambulance was called and a man was taken away by the emergency vehicle into their care.

Meanwhile, on Monday at 9.40pm a similar report of a man in the water was received — this time near Kip Marina.

As the lifeboat arrived on scene to begin the search, the person was located on shore by police.

Royal Navy helicopter rescue 177 from Prestwick, along with Largs Coastguard shore based rescue team, were also involved in the search. The lifeboat crew were stood down and returned to station.

And on Tuesday evening at around 10.35, reports that a man had been assulted in Ritchie Street, Millport, resulted in a police chopper being sent across to the island, providing extra police reinforcements. Police enquiries are continuing into the incident.
