It will be “Doors Open Day” this weekend, giving free access to fascinating buildings, some of which are closed to the public.

Among the special openings will be Clark Memorial Church, on Sunday 6 September from noon until 4pm.

Earlier this year, there were restoration works to the church of both stonework and the great east window of the chancel, by William Meikle & Sons, famous stained glass makers of Glasgow. William Meikle & Company started making glass in 1886.

The church has always attracted much interest and admiration. Most of it was installed at the time of the building of the church in 1892.

Other openings are: * Fairlie - the Organic Growers of Fairlie, Pier Road, open on Saturday 5 September 12.30-4.30pm. Community garden growing a wide variety of fruit and vegetables in raised beds and three polytunnels. This is a sustainable garden with a peripheral woodland walk, picnic areas on the coast and an indoor seated area. Quiz for children, garden tours, demonstrations, vegetable/plant and Fairtrade stalls.

Fairlie Parish Church is open on Saturday 5 September 10am-4pm. Built as a Chapel of Ease in 1843, and extended in 1883 by J J Stevenson. Superb windows by Alfred and Gordon Webster, J H Dearle, Morris, Powell and Moira Malcolm of Prestwick.

* Largs - Largs Museum, Kirkgate House, Manse Court, off Main Street, open Saturday and Sunday (2pm to 5pm). Largs Museum Trust presents a fine collection of domestic artefacts, seaside souvenirs, and photographs of old Largs and Australian connections; and archival material for researchers. Also access to Skelmorlie Aisle, 1636 Renaissance-style canopied tomb within mausoleum to Montgomerie family.

* Largs Masonic Temple, Frazer Street, open on Sunday from 1-4pm. Opened in 1910 and still largely in original condition with many original features and furniture. Collection of Masonic Memorabilia.

* Largs Observer Corps, 39A Moorburn Road, open Sunday. Private museum containing instruments, uniforms and memorabilia relating to the aircraft reporting duties in WW2 and the potential nuclear missile attack scenarios on Scotland during the Cold War. Contains a mock up above ground aircraft reporting post, underground monitoring post and group control. Booking essential Tel: 07513 504115 to reserve a place.

St Columba’s Parish Church, open Saturday noon-4pm and Sunday 2-4pm. Red sandstone church built 1892. Threestage tower with spire and clock.

St John’s Parish Church, open Sunday 11-4pm. Building reconstructed late 19th century in French Romanesque style.

* Portencross Castle, open Saturday 11- 4pm. Built by Robert Boyd c.1360, and extended to form a tower with five-storey wing. Robert II frequent visitor, signed charters here. Semi-ruinous, but major conservation project 2010 allows access to the interior, including Great Hall with original vaulted ceiling and to the roof for spectacular views.

* West Kilbride’s Barony Centre, open Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday noon-5pm Superb church conversion for Craft Town Scotland. Winner of GIA Design Award, and HC + C in RIAS Awards.Exhibition: Hidden Agenda: Socially Conscious Craft, a Crafts Council touring show.
