The Royal British Legion is carrying out a tribute at Largs War Memorial at 11am on Tuesday, and Largs Library hosting exhibition and a talk, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Largs British Legion branch will be commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day on Tuesday, members of the public are invited to be at the war memorial just before 11am.

Largs Library are hosting two important events to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Firstly, the library is hosting a ‘Gathering the Voices exhibition’ from Friday 30 January-Friday 6 February.

The exhibition, which opens on Friday 30 January, contains a wealth of fascinating images and reminiscence that helps bring to life the experiences of the people who came to Scotland to escape the Holocaust.

Their stories are remarkable, and through the exhibition you will discover how people coped with prejudice, adversity and tragedy and moved on to have fulfilling lives in their new country. More information about the Gathering the Voices project, and recordings of these interviews, can be found at www.gatheringthevoices.com.

And a a special talk takes place on Monday 2 February from 7-8pm: “Keep the memory alive”.

The library will host speakers from the ‘Gathering the Voices’ project, Howard and Claire Singerman. Howard, a retired solicitor, will be telling the story of his late mother Susan Singerman, a survivor of Auschwitz concentration camp. Susan spoke to many adults and schoolchildren about her experiences in the Holocaust, and she was awarded the MBE for services to Holocaust education.

Howard will also be showing part of a video interview with her. Howard’s wife Claire, a retired history teacher, will be talking about the Gathering the Voices project, which has recorded the testimonies of over 30 Holocaust survivors, Kindertransportees and World War 2 refugees who settled in Scotland before, during and after the war.

There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion with them both at the end of the talk.

The talk starts at 7pm and is free to attend. All are welcome; please phone Largs Library on 01475 673309 or email largslibrary@north-ayrshire.gov.uk for more details of both events and to book a place at Monday’s talk.
