An old ‘News’ article from 1968 appeared on Facebook about a double decker crash on the Haylie Brae, and found that a wee whisky always calms the nerves!

The Western S.M.T bus was travelling from Glasgow to Largs and almost dropped 50 feet down a bank at a hairpin bend.

The bus, with 50 holidaymakers, failed to take the bend, swung across the road and hit a wall.

It demolished 20 feet of the wall below which was the 50 ft drop, but the driver pulled the wheel round and the bus swerved to the other side of the road and crashed through a wall. The rear wheels came to rest on what was left of the wall, and the passengers were thrown from their seats across the bus. Six women were taken to Paisley Royal Alexandria Infirmary, but were allowed to go home in the evening.

One of the passengers, Mr Harry Collins, of Jordanhill, who had a bottle of whisky, gave all the passengers a tot as they waited for ambulances and a relief bus to Largs.

Fiona Cowan commented: “Ah, they knew how to behave in those days!” Alison Masterson said: “Gosh! I am glad we weren’t on the road in those days.” James T M Towill added: “In the days before political correctness!” After, an ambulance brought two of the passengers to the bus station, where four joined the ambulance and went to the Paisley Infirmary.
