There was strong interest in the Millport Community Council elections on Monday.

Around 150 people filled the DA Hall at 6.30pm to vote on the new members who are as follows: Phil Lonsdale, Sharon Hagan, Graham Wallace, Angie McCallum, Stewart Cape, Alec Caldwell and Suki McGregor.

Member Suki McGregor told the 'News': "What a fantastic turnout for the first Community Council elections in 18 years. I am looking forward to doing my best for this fabulous wee island and her community along by with the other six elected."

Councillor Louise McPhater, Cabinet member for Communities, said community councillors can make a big difference to their communities.

Councillor McPhater added: “This is a real opportunity for people to have a meaningful voice for their local communities.

“Many people may think that they don’t have the skills or knowledge to be a community councillor but all they really need is a will to work for the benefit of their local community.

“Community councillors will have a voice on issues of importance and play a vital role in influencing decisions and supporting causes on behalf of local communities.”

No election was necessary in Fairlie on Monday evening as there were only five members for the seven positions available, and these were taken by Rita Holmes, Karla Tully, Iain Hunter, Joan Downie and David Telford.

Interested members of the public still have the opportunity to stand for election at Largs Community Council.

The nomination deadline is Thursday 10 November for Largs, and Monday 21 for Skelmorlie Community Council.

Anyone interested in standing for election, should call North Ayrshire Council’s Committee Services team on 01294 324131 for a nomination form.
