The Field Studies Centre in Millport has become a 'flagship for Scotland' in marine studies.

These are the words of councillor Alex Gallagher, Cabinet member for economy, who recently visited the centre to celebrate the completion of the £4million redevelopment work.

He was joined by staff and students from the centre who are using the facility for their outdoor learning.

The expansion include 65 en-suite bedrooms, upgrade to its learning and meeting spaces as well as the on-site Robertson Museum and Aquarium and nearby Keppel Pier which has also undergone improvements.

The group enjoyed a tour of the facility and got to see first-hand the work of FSC Millport which includes designing and running courses for environmental professionals, courses in natural history, art and exploration for all ages from school children to University level students.

Over the last three years, the Council together with its partners – Highlands & Islands Enterprise, The Field Studies Council and the Scottish Government have been on a journey to secure investment for the future of Millport Field Centre.

Councillor Alex Gallagher said: “We are delighted the facility is now complete and we share the Field Studies Council’s vision for it to become a flagship for field studies in Scotland.

“It is great to see first-hand the impact the investment has made both on the new accommodation and teaching buildings and on the way outdoor learning can help close the attainment gap, enhance literacy and numeracy and develop essential life skills.

He added: “Education, particularly outdoor education, is key to the success of the station – by working with our schools, colleges and universities, the facility will help to bridge the inequality gap by offering something for all ages and levels to enjoy.

“I am delighted that the council has played a key role in securing the long term future of the facility.”
