A Millport golfer is king of the swingers after notching a superb success at the Scottish Disability Golf season finale at St Andrew's.

Jim Thomson of Millport was one of the top 24 disabled golfers from across the UK who were invited to attend the big golfing event at the traditional Scottish home of golf.

Jim was up against players from as far afield, as London, Liverpool, and Lancashire on the St Andrews Links Jubilee Golf Course on Wednesday 12 October and the Old Course Hotel owned Dukes Golf Course on Thursday 13 October.

The event hosts, Scottish Disability Golf, invited the current Scottish Order of Merit Champion, The Scottish Open winner from earlier in the year held at Kinross, as well as the British Masters Champion and the numerous winners from the Scottish Merit Tables across the year.

And the Scottish Order of Merit Championship, 15 events, was won by the Millport man with 134 pts.

The SDGP’s 2017 season will tee off in April, with games across the country, including venues in Ayrshire, Perthshire, Invernessshire, Fife.and Edinburgh.

In recent years, Jim has also represented Scotland in a Ryder Cup style event against England in disability golf.

Jimmy told the ‘News’ he is lucky to be alive after a freak road accident left him as an amputee, and was honoured to be selected as one of the baton bearers for the Queen’s Relay in the Commonwealth Games.

Jim, 72, of Golf Road, lost the lower half of his left leg below the knee, after a horror accident on the A760 Haylie Brae around five years ago.

The islander also triumphed in the inaugural Lynne Cairns Memorial Shield earlier this year.
