Some of Millport's famous landmarks are set to feature in 'Only an Excuse' on Hogmanay.

Comedian Jonathan Watson and colleagues were down filming in Millport on Sunday for the famous football comedy show which is something of a national institution.

The comedy scenes were filmed at various locations including the Crocodile Rock, Mapes Cycle Shop and the Garrison.

Jonathan is no stranger to the local area, having filmed for BBC's Waterloo Road in Largs a few years ago, and once hosted his 'Only an Excuse' theatre tour show at Barrfields Theatre.

Islander Jensen Newton, who runs the Crazy Golf facility in Millport, received a call from the BBC Comedy Unit on Friday about the visit.

Jensen said: "It was quite a surprise. The BBC were wanting to do some of the filming at the Crazy Golf, and I said 'Of course, no problem!' and they came down to film at Newton Beach, and were here for most of the day. It is quite something for Millport to get this kind of coverage.

"It looked like Jonathan Watson had a red hair wig, so it could have been any number of impersonations, possibly Gordon Strachan or Denis Law.

And Ken Mapes, owner of Mapes of Millport cycle and toy shop, said: "They were filming on one of our quad bikes. I believe it is for their Hogmanay show, so Millport will be getting a bit of national coverage."

Millport has proved to be quite a magnet for television and movies over the years, from BBC's 'Rab C Nesbitt' to more recently, Elaine C. Smith's 'Burdz Eye View' programme. It was also used for filming for a McDonald's tv commercial, as well as a teen horror flick 'Love Bite' which was filmed in The Ritz Cafe.
