Primary school children on Millport are set to benefit from an innovative new healthy eating programme as the Garrison Cafe re-opens next month.
Healthy eating is very much to the fore in the new concept behind the revamped cafe, which will be run by Lynne and Kenny Bogan.
Three experienced members of staff from the former cafe are staying, and more will be recruited over the months ahead. The cafe has been a popular addition to the Garrison since it re-opened in 2009, and islanders had expressed their frustration when the cafe closed at weekends during the winter months. But the new cafe is set to open next week, including weekends.
The eaterie will still host general food such as soups, paninis, baked potatoes, sandwiches and home baking, but has an additional focus thanks to the FitNut programme.
This is a practical fitness and nutrition learning resource for schools, clubs and nurseries designed to promote healthy habits in students aged 3-11, but the wider community will benefit too.
It is currently delivered in schools and nurseries by teachers and children’s coaches. The addition of a FITNUT menu within the Garrison House Cafe is an extension of the fitnut brand and is there to help take the stress out of ordering for parents.
Owner Lynne Bogan said: “We plan to donate the FITNUT program to the local primary school in order to spread the healthy word within the youngest members of the community.
“We also have plans to hold nutrition workshops for older adults to help the ageing community understand how best to look after themselves.
“A healthy diet can be the key to a positive outlook and staying emotionally balanced. Whatever your age, eating well should be all about fresh, tasty food, wholesome ingredients, and eating with friends and family.
“We are passionate about good real food, the health and wellbeing of children and their families and we believe that we have created a menu that always offers a healthy alternative for all.”
Live music sessions are planned for Sunday afternoons once the Garrison Cafe re-opens.
