Bag snatch

Millport pensioner Margaret Young is warning people, especially the elderly, to be very vigilant when shopping in Largs. Margaret was in Wilkies store on Saturday 29 January when her handbag was stolen. Luckily her house keys and purse were actually in the shopping bag, but her mobile phone and other important possessions were taken with the handbag.

The police were called and arrived within ten minutes and they were very kind and helpful, as were the staff in Wilkies. There were two suspects, both women, and were caught on the shop's CCTV but unfortunately their faces were hidden.

Margaret said that the police responded very quickly and she saw two other constables in Largs Main Street obviously on the look-out.

CCDC Annual Meeting

Cumbrae Community Development Company held their AGM on Monday 30 January. The chairman Stephen Dobbin thanked everyone for attending and apologised for the lateness of the AGM which was outwith their control. The financial report was adopted and seconded after a discussion. One of the main topics of discussion was the forthcoming closure of the public toilets in the town by NAC on 1 April. Stephen stated that CCDC were taking them over for next season, including the rolling lease of the toilets at the pier.

The refurbishment of Cumbrae holiday apartments was discussed and it was revealed that a lot of refurbishment would be done this year, with the hope also of knocking two of the apartments into one, making a larger one for groups. The cafe would be re-opening on Friday 3 February with the new sub-contractors offering a varied and healthy menu and extended opening hours.

Two directors Christine McCulloch and Bob Campbell were retiring after six years. Both were presented with a bouquet of flowers and thanked for the enormous amount of work over the years. Five new members were elected onto the board.

Five new members were elected onto the board. CEO Michael Bertram gave a presentation with slides showing work done and future projects.

He made mention of their 'funding fathers', especially John Burtt, Jim Hamilton and Alex Dobbin, without whose hard work with others there would be no Garrison House.

In fact it was twenty years this month that they held a sit-in protest, and then organised the funding to restore the building.

Michael said that there are now really urgent repairs required due to poor workmanship at the time. He also said that there would be a new leaseholder moving into West Lodge.

A film followed that the board had made about The Garrison. Those attending had the chance to ask questions and the meeting then closed with a vote of thanks for the Chair.
