Thank You

When correspondent Mary Currie picked up her tv guide in the newsagents recently there was a lovely note attached to her magazine. The note read: "The Millport Girl Guides, Brownies, and Rainbows are extremely grateful to everyone who has kindly donated money to us over the years. Your support helps us to have a great time at our meetings and when we go on trips." The note was written by one of the girls.

The Lighthouse Walking Group

All parents, carers or friends of Cumbrae Primary School are invited to join the Lighthouse Walking Group which started on Thursday 7 February. Everyone meets in the Lighthouse Room in the school at 1.15pm. The walk will start at 1.30pm and takes approximately one hour. Then everyone will return to the Lighthouse Room for coffee and a blether and if appropriate, collect their children at 3pm. They are saying 'Come and join us, walking is good for the body and mind.'

Cumbrae Primary

In January, all children at Cumbrae Primary studies aspects of Scotland, and the life of Robert Burns. In a prelude to P7's Burns Supper on Thursday 9 February, the whole school, including the early years class, had a concert on Monday 6 February in the gym. The concert entitled 'A celebration of Scotland' was wonderful. Head teacher Miss Sharman welcomed a full hall of parents, carers, grandparents and friends and handed over to Benjamin Hamilton and Kayla Dobbin of P7. Both pupils did a great job introducing all the acts with clear concise voices. Kayla even introduced Benjamin's part after she danced with the country dancing group. The nursery group recited 'The Wee Rid Motor' and were amazing, remembering all the words. P3/P4 then sang The Jelly Piece Song which was hilarious and their actions were great. The Recorder Group did a lovely recital and the choir sang a beautiful 'Caledonia'. The country dancing group perfectly performed 'The Virginia Reel' then Benjamin sang 'Rantin Rovin Robin' - Benjamin has a beautiful voice.

P1/P2 sang 'The world must be coming to an end' which was so funny and they also remembered all their words.

P1 prizewinners and P2 prizewinners of the Burns competition for recitation, Jack Armour and Sophie Batty, also recited their winning poems and they were both amazing.

Then the audience were treated to a duet by Jay Currie and John Thomson of P7 of 'My love is like a red, red rose'. It was beautiful and brought tears to the eyes.

P3-6 recitation winners were Ruby Cape, Holly Hamilton, Lydia Hutchison, and Myles Miller all recited their winning poems and all four were perfect.

P5/6 sang 'The Centipede' song with great energy then with a lovely lyrical voice Shannon Docherty of P7 sang 'My heart is in the Highlands' - her winning song in the Burns competition. P7 winner for recitation Kayla Dobbin followed with her winning version of 'Tam O Shanter', and the winner of the instrumental Rory Healy and Yuri Joyce performed with 'Auld Acquaintance'.

P7 then gave a brilliant and hilarious rendition of 'Donald where's ma troosers' - they brought the roof down as Yuri appeared in a large kilt on a hula hoop as Donald, and John Thomson dressed as a hilarious Elvis for part of the song. Also a special mention to Jay Currie who was a brave boy and dressed up as a girl to balance the number of boys and girls. He looked gorgeous! Kayla and Benjamin thanked Mrs Joyce and Mrs Morris for all their help with the music on the piano and guitar.

The whole school sang The Proclaimers famous song '500 Miles' followed by 'Auld Lang Syne'.

It was a fabulous concert showcasing the talent on the island.

Staff and pupils would like to thank you Cumbrae Burns Club and Cumbrae community for their continued support. Special thanks to the parents for supporting the children learning their words. All the art done for the event will be on display at The Garrison to show off the children's creativity.
