Thought for the Week

by Revd Canon Alec Boyd, Assistant Canon at The Cathedral of The Isles

One way to take life’s pulse is to turn to the agony columns in magazines or to the chat shows on TV and Radio. Many people fret about life with divided loyalties and the difficult choices to provide for those they love and care for. 10% increases in electricity bills and the gradually increasing cost of fuel at the pumps doesn’t make life any easier! The Virtual Reality of cyberspace dangles out the bait to entrap us into a fantasy of escapism.

The struggle between the seven deadly sins and the seven heavenly virtues of the New Testament lies within the films “Trainspotting” and “Trainspotting 2”. The films graphically highlight that there are choices to make between good and evil. “Take Life” in the film music comes from the Bible Book of Deuteronomy and urges us all to make correct and informed choices.

As Winter passes and turns gradually into early Spring the crocuses and daffodils begin to bloom. Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday fall next week and we begin the church’s season of Lent. Lent encourages us to take a take the pulse of our own lives so that by Easter we can look to the future with hope, make our own informed decisions and choose life to enjoy all the good things real life offers and to see our own lives grow and bloom too.
