Cumbrae Primary's participation in the Mock Court Challenge was a great success, with the pupils winning runner up position for the West of Scotland!

The case was based on an old lady - Mrs Telfer who had sent her grandson to get a new battery for her mobile telephone. The 15 year old grandson returns with a 'superdooper' new phone on a contract with internet etc. Talk 'N' Text are taking Mrs Telfer to court because of non-payment of her mobile telephone bill.

The children were split into two court teams - defenders and prosecutors. In their team they had to build a case either to defend Mrs Telfer and prove that she should not pay the bill or to pursue Mrs Telfer on behalf of Talk N Text to prove she should pay the bill.

Everyone was required to make their own gowns (assisted by the talented Mrs Murphy and Mrs Hagan), writing newspaper reports of the proceedings and create court artistry! The children then went to Glasgow High Court to present their information in front of a real sheriff against an opposing school.

Cumbrae children did brilliantly and were the runners up for the West of Scotland.

The pupils then went to Edinburgh Central Hall for the finals and watched as the winning team performed. One of the Lords had travelled from Luxembourg to take part. Cumbrae children were called up as they received the Gown Maker Award for the West of Scotland too.

It was an amazing opportunity for the children to take their learning into a real life context.
