Sonoro Success

The Cumbrae Community Choir, formed in 2016, named Sonoro, held two very successful concerts recently..

Over 60 voices filled the DA Hall with melodies, harmonies, and beautiful music. Their first song was 'Sing' and young Luke Laidlaw aged 12 gave a beautiful solo accompanied by the entire ensemble. The choir filled the stage and also used the floor at the front of it. Choir leader and the founder of the choir, Rhona Gourlay, welcomed the audience and said that they were all now their official fan club.

She explained that the name of the choir, Sonoro, means resonant rich tone.

The song 'Brave' was chosen for the power of its words. The choir sang this with spot solos by Pam Fleming, Kirsten Patterson and Emma Newton, and it was haunting and melodic.

'Thankful' was a lovely song with a spiritual meaning of life, and the quartet of Liz Laidlaw, Amanda Wright, Scott Watson and John Orr gave a great four part harmony.

'I believe' and 'Hallelujah' were beautifully sang and Scott and John were soloists accompanied by everyone. A great audience participation then took place with 'Play a simple melody' with Rhona conducting the audience, and proving how her enthusiasm and talent can create the best from everyone.

The fantastic finale was 'Andrew Lloyd Webber in Concert' and many of the songs from these musicals, and included solos from Pam Fleming, Lorraine Fraser, Penny Healy, Kirsten Patterson, Scott Watson, and Robert Wilson.

Rhona than thanked everyone who had taken part, and all who had helped. The musical director was Alistair Chisholm BEM who was accompanied by Alec Boyd (drums), Sandy Fleming (guitar), and Jim McCallum (Bass). Sound and lighting by Andy Watson.

Boys Brigade

This 1st Millport Boys Brigade took part in Sunday Worship at Cumbrae Parish Church's service in the DA Hall. The service was led by visiting cleric Douglas Creighton and there was a large congregation. The colours were paraded in and after the 1st hymn and a prayer the story of Noah's Ark was told by all the boys in three sections with Luke Laidlaw, reading the story and everyone pinning pictures onto a storyboard of the stage, which made an impressive sight.

Captain Jackie Wilson then announced the prizewinners and awards which were presented by Rev Marjory Mackay. Every junior and anchor boy received a prize. The best squad was Anchor Boys squad. The best recruit was Josh Brooke. The cup for endeavour was awarded to Ryco Wylie. Luke Laidlaw won the cup for Scripture Knowledge and Jamie Patrick won the skills award. Three boys have achieved the President's Award. The awards were presented by Jordan Currie, Fynn Healy and Craig McLaren.

The highest award in the Boys Brigade is The Queen's Badge, which includes over 280 hours of service in the BBs and the community.
