A group of amputees joined other fundraisers in Millport to cycle around the island for charity 'Finding Your Feet'.

Strong winds didn’t deter them as they set off at 11am on Sunday, cheered on by families and guests at the charity’s annual “Family Fun’Raiser.”

The day was sponsored by Children’s Aid Scotland, and featured games and entertainment for the whole family. Goodie bags were donated by Filshill and Golden Casket, and Highland Spring provided plenty of refreshments for those cycling and volunteering. Fundraisers were also entered into a draw to win a £200 voucher to spend in a local Keystore.

As well as the amputees taking part, 10-year-old Ben Terris cycled around the island four times to raise money for the charity. He raised £100. Ben said: “My mum works with the charity, so I’ve met some people that they help. I wanted to challenge myself raise money for them.”

Another person taking part, Elizabeth Yesil, cycled around the island with her children 30 years ago. She took on the 10 miles to prove she could still do it after her amputation last year. Elizabeth said: “It was amazing. It was the first time I’ve been on a bike since my operation, which was a year ago this week.”

The cycle was yet another example of the activities Finding Your Feet run. Money raised will now contribute to funding more events and clubs for amputees, which include swimming, rock climbing and gardening.

Corinne Hutton, quadruple amputee and founder of the charity, completed the cycle for a third year running. She previously made history on Cumbrae when she cycled the fastest 10km ever travelled on a quadricycle.

“It was amazing to return to Cumbrae and raise awareness about the charity and what we do. I love seeing the amputees getting involved, and as much as today was about fundraising, it also gave the people we work with a chance to take on another challenge and prove to themselves nothing can stop them.”

A grand total of £2500 was raised for the Finding Your Feet charity supporting families affected by limb loss.
