Church

We have a new minister! Rev Jonathan Fleming was voted into the linked charge including Cumbrae Parish and St John’s in Largs. Jonathan received a standing ovation. Cumbrae Parish Church look forward to him starting in October, and getting to know him, his wife Karyn and their daughters, Rachel and Hollie.

Cathedral

The ninth Classical Guitar Retreat takes place next month at the Cathedral of the Isles. Various concerts take place including Young Artist Concert, Wednesday 5 July, 8pm; Amadeus Duo Thursday 6 July 8pm; Raphaella Smits Solo Recital Friday 7 July, 8pm; Bardic Trio, Saturday 8 July, 3pm; Lukasz Kuropaczewski Sunday 9 July, 3pm. The Classical Guitar Retreat offers an intensive five day residential course which immerses the students into the world of Classical Guitar. Throughout the course students have the opportunity to receive tuition and advice from a top team of teachers.

Comedy festival

The Cumbrae Comedy festival returns for a second year on Friday July 21 and Saturday July 22 in the D.A Hall with Big Gary Little, Julia Sutherland, Phil Differ and Des McLean. Children’s comedy to be announced, and other venues to be confirmed. Pint Size Productions return to the Newton on Friday July 21 for ‘Scrubbers’.

Rockpools

North Ayrshire Rangers invite everyone to join an adventure to discover what lurks in the rockpools on Monday July 3. Meet at Croc Rock at 1.30pm, and wear sturdy clothes and boots/shoes. This is a free event.

Premier Stores

Millport Premier Store has been asking for donations for the families of the Grenfell Tower Fire tragedy in London.

The store stated: "In support of those affected by the recent tower block fire in London we have set up a donation bucket in the store. All donations no matter how small will be gratefully received."

Poetry

A poem at Largs and Fairlie railway stations this month is from island resident Frances Melling.

The poem is published by Poems and Pints of Largs and is the latest in a long and successful series prepared by Largs Writers' Jack Muir for the stations.

Poetry is very strong in this area and the new Cumbrae Contemporary Society's success shows the strength of this new wave in this part of Scotland.The latest competition is for poetry fit to appear on the walls of Suki 's famous toilets.

Fog

Cal Mac ferries between Cumbrae and Largs had disruption on Monday morning due to heavy fog. Ferries were off until 8.40am and they resumed with a 15 minute service departing Largs at 9.15am.

Exhibition

The Museum of the Cumbraes located within the Garrison in Millport is hosting a summer exhibition on Andrew Goldie, Millport’s own explorer.

Model Railway

The Millport Model Railway Club is based within the Garrison grounds and is open throughout the summer months from 1-4pm.
