The Scottish Shadow Minister for Transport believes a solution needs to be found to the road and travel chaos which affects Largs on busy days.
Responding to concerns that the local infrastructure was unable to cope with all the congestion, Conservative Jamie Greene, who is also West of Scotland list MSP, said: "My office in Fort Street, Largs sees the heavy traffic and queues daily. Tourism is up, and roads clog. What's the solution? More crossings? Roads?!"
Cheaper ferry fares have also had an impact with longer waits to get on board the Cal Mac ferry with added congestion on Fort Street and Bath Street, leading to the ferry.
At midday, Cal Mac reported that vehicles were facing up to a two hour wait because of the queues.
Resident Colin Sutherland said: "It was the same a couple of Mondays back when we had nice weather. Surely CalMac could muster a crew to get a third ferry on when it gets that busy - they have spare fleet available as MV Loch Linnhe and MV Loch Bhrusda have been tied up at a jetty on the Holy Loch all summer."
On the whole Cal Mac network, passenger numbers increased by 7.1% between January and May to 1.87m compared to the same period last year, while total cars transported climbed even faster, by 8 per cent to 502,000, and coaches by 8.6 per cent to 2,900.
The rest of the roads network has also been affected by the good weather. Motorist Alison Greene remarked: "I found it nearly as hard to get out of Largs as it was to get in... cars coming in were blocking the side streets off the Irvine road so nobody could turn down causing a jam for people driving straight through. Have people forgotten the unspoken rule of not blocking access to side streets when traffic is busy?"
And it was all too a familiar problem for motorists on the Haylie Brae, with one driver tweeting his views to Transport Scotland las Wednesday: "At midday, the Haylie Brae was backed up towards the fishery, while others are reporting traffic backed in other areas of the town. The police are at the ferry directing traffic.
"What's wrong on Haylie Brae in Largs? Stuck nose to tail for 20 mins so far!"
Largs Community Council have also raised concerns about long stay parking in the Union Street/Sandringham area of town because of visitors heading off to the Isle of Cumbrae for the weekend, with suggestions that local residents in that area should receive parking permits.
Independent councillor Ian Murdoch has concerns about the situation, and told the 'News': "The ferry queue has been a problem - there have been various issues exacerbated by people who park along stretch at Fort Street winds its way round to Bath Street and Sandringham. There was one police officer there on Saturday directing the traffic in Fort Street and Bath Street, and another to co-ordinate it at the bottom of Charles Street.
"I am working with the police and North Ayrshire Council to find some kind of solution."
Ferry users group secretary Bill Steele said: "It has now happened on a good number of occasions. It is something that is going to have to be looked at. A solution needs to be found. It was something we warned that would happen with the introduction of RET (road equivalent tariff) meaning cheaper ferry fares. We need to deter cars coming over to Cumbrae and get people back to being foot passengers."
