A new Cumbrae eco group has been set up to do regular beach cleans around on the island in the battle against plastic on our shores, while Largs is having a beach clean on Sunday morning.

On Friday afternoon, a group of volunteers got together at Kames Bay on Cumbrae to clear the beach of rubbish.

Pamela Fleming, one of the co-ordinators of the Cumbrae group said: "We filled eight bin liners in an hour and 15 minutes...In order of volume.. fishing line, nylon rope, small pieces of fishing net, plastic cotton bud sticks, bottle tops, plastic tampon applicators, plastic bags, polythene bags, plastic bottles.

"I was really pleased that we didn’t find a lot of bottles. I suspect this is due to our wonderful resident beach walkers who I often see picking up plastic from the beach and putting it in the nearby bin."

A Largs community beach clean is taking place on Sunday morning. Meet at the Largs ferry slip at 9.30am. Gloves, black bags, hi-vis jackets and litter pickers will be provided.
