Cumbrae Support Team who are part of Civil Contingencies were on call from day one during the Beast from the East.

The whole team came out when coordinator Bob Campbell requested those who could make it to the ‘Drop-in Centre’ and get fitted out with their emergency equipment. i.e clothing, radios, etc to attend to respond immediately to the call.

Over three days the team visited over 80 houses to check that the residents were all okay.

The residents were very happy to see them and if any assistance was required, this was provided by the team members. Some had not ventured out for several days and many had not seen anyone for a couple of days.

The voluntary team worked diligently through their emergency support list and also took the opportunity to update and amend where necessary.

Cumbrae Support Team would also like to give thanks to fellow neighbours and local shop keepers, who advised the team of local people who had not been seen for a few days.

One of the challenges for the team was that they could not use their cars and visits had to be made on foot. Thanks also to the Elderly Forum who have now authorised support team coordinator Bob Campbell as an approved driver for their mini-bus.

Finally, the team would like to thank everyone who came together in the time of need to ensure that the ‘beast from the east’ did not dampen local energies and community support.
