THE times could be changing for the Cumbrae ferry.

A proposal has been launched by the ferry users' group for a new timetable to enhance employment opportunities for islanders.

They have proposed that first service should depart 15 minutes earlier each day, to give commuters from Cumbrae better access to rush hour public transport.

The move has received backing in the Scottish Parliament from shadow transport minister Jamie Greene MSP.

Cumbrae Ferry Users' Group have been pushing for the change for three years, despite the Scottish Government rejecting their proposals so far.

By allowing an earlier ferry departure time, island residents would be able to access earlier trains to Glasgow.

This would allow residents to commute to Glasgow in time for the start of the day.

West of Scotland Conservative MSP Mr Greene says better transport options can play an important part in tackling depopulation, which impacts Cumbrae.

He says better links would make the island a more attractive option for people to settle.

He has written to transport minister Humza Yousaf and Transport Scotland lobbying for change.

Mr Greene said: “A slight change in the Cumbrae ferry’s timetable could significantly benefit the residents, as it would open up new employment opportunities.

"Depopulation is an issue with Cumbrae.

"But by making it a more viable location for people to come and make their home we could not only address this matter but also bring wealth and expertise into the community.

“I urge transport minister Humza Yousaf to give serious considerations to these proposals, which could deliver much economic benefits to the island community."
