Forty-three members of a Glasgow family have held a special party weekend in Millport.

The Smith family, who have been visiting the island for 48 years, came to Cumbrae to celebrate their youngest sister’s 70th birthday.

Gerry Jordet, who had reached the milestone occasion, travelled from her home in Norway with 12 relatives to be at the party.

Another sister, Patricia Kerr, told the News: “We called it the Viking invasion — what a magic time it was.” Patricia, who lives in Uddingston, said: “The Smith family all live in the Glasgow area and have been visiting the island for 48 years. We hold a reunion there every year and this year was very special as it was Gerry’s 70th.

“Forty-three family members dined at the Garrison. Some stayed in the Cathedral of the Isles while some of the younger family members stayed in the Royal George Hotel.

“As usual, we met on the Sunday at the “Crocodile Rock” to throw roses into the water in memory of our brother Frank who died 15 years ago.

“It is a beautiful place to visit and we look forward to our trip over every year.” Patricia said the family’s ages ranged from 69 to 89 years. This year, one sister — Kathleen — was in hospital and could not join them.
