A revolutionary new ferry will be coming into use on the Cumbrae-Largs route for a temporary period early in 2015.
The MV Lochinvar is one of the the world’s first sea going roll on roll off vehicle and passenger diesel electric hybrid ferries - and is already familiar to locals after it ran some sea trials in the local area earlier this year.
A spokesman for Cal Mac said: “The MV Loch Shira is going in for its annual dry dock maintenance, and during this period, the MV Lochinvar will be in use on the Cumbrae-Largs ferry route.
“The MV Lochinvar has already been doing the Rothesay-Colintraive route. The MV Lochinvar is slightly smaller than the MV Loch Shira, but that shouldn’t be a problem as it will be in use during a quieter period of the year.” Ferguson Shipbuilders, Port Glasgow, worked alongside Glasgow based ship design specialists Seatec and electrical specialists Tec-Source to fit out the hybrid ferry.
