Local MP Katy Clark has written a scathing letter to North Ayrshire Council after saying that Cumbrae’s roads were in ‘the worst condition’ she had seen in a long time.

Ms Clark, who saw the damage first hand during her visit to hold her advice surgery in Millport, said she was shocked at the condition of the roads.

She told the 'News': “Potholes are always a problem when we experience periods of cold weather and I know that they are a problem across the whole of my constituency. However, I was appalled at the state of the coast road from the ferry terminal towards Millport town, it was quite literally the worst surface condition I have seen on any road for a long time.

“I have written to North Ayrshire Council to express my concerns about the road and ask that they look to find funds to repair it to an acceptable standard as soon as possible.” In her letter to the council’s chief executive Elma Murray, the MP said: “I know that road repairs are a problem for every local authority, especially at this time of year when we experience cold periods. I have had correspondence with the council over a long period of time about potholes and the work done on our local road surfaces as I feel that too often work is done to patch roads rather than repair them which may be more cost efficient in the short term but will cost more in the long term as roads need repeated repairs. I am today writing to you about the roads on Cumbrae.

“Last Friday I was appalled to find the surface on the coast road leading from the ferry terminal to Millport in a state of disrepair. Quite frankly the surface condition was the worst I have seen on any road for a long time. I am therefore writing to request that the road is inspected and repaired to an acceptable standard as soon as possible.”
