The annual series of concerts "Music for a Summer Afternoon" begins its 2015 season this Sunday 14 June at 3pm in the Cathedral of The Isles, Millport.

The building dating from 1851 is an early masterpiece of the Victorian architect William Butterfield, and is a wonderful venue for music. Surprisingly the floor area is small and the building can only accommodate about 100 people, so all the concerts are intimate affairs.

But because of the considerable height of the roof, musicians relish the warm supportive acoustic which has been achieved by Butterfield.

Over the years, a happy concert format has evolved. Every Sunday from now till the end of September, a concert lasting about an hour will begin at 3pm. Entrance is free to all, but audience members are asked to contribute generously to a retiring collection which will help with the expenses of the visiting musicians.

The programmes vary widely, from piano recitals to one for Scots fiddle, form choral music to work for classical guitar, from organ recitals to a concert by string quartet. What we aim for in them all, is a high standard of performance.

These are happy afternoons, where some of our finest performers come to the Cathedral to share their favourite music with a receptive enthusiastic audience from Millport and "a' the airts".

Why not enjoy a Sunday afternoon of Cumbrae and spend a delighteful hour in the Cathedral? It may become a habit!

This Sunday's concert will be given by the fine young cellist Feargus Egan who will be accompanied on the Cathedral's Bösendorfer grand piano by one of Scotland's finest keyboard players - David Hamilton. Their programme will include folk music settings by Schumann and works by Rederick Delius and Frank Bridge.

A real treat is in store. See you on Sunday at 3pm!
