A sumptuous feast of mostly late 19th century music was presented last Sunday at the Cathedral of The Isles.
Millport maestro Alastair Chisholm (piano) was joined by Jane Guy contralto and Tom Hay clarinet in a programme of works by Busoni, Brahms, Stevenson and Dale. From the universally loved Cradle Song by Brahms to the virtually unknown Come Away Death by Benjamin Dale, this was a rich offering.
A warm top register and sonorous low notes from Jane Guy with melodic mastery from Tom Hay were matched by some dextrous and sensitive keyboard playing from Alastair Chisholm. Perhaps the highlight of the programme was Ronald Stevenson’s Nocturne composed in 1965 as a homage to John Field.
Stevenson, a real composer for the people, also features in today’s recital given by Christopher Guild, piano. These Sunday concerts at 3pm are worth a visit. The music never fails to surprise.
