Police 'copters swoop on Millport
Police helicopters were drafted into Millport for a dramatic early morning raid after an islander claimed he was going to use a firearm.
Armed units were called in after the man, in his fifties and from the Crawford Street area, became considered as a potential danger to himself and others.
Millport Police were alerted to the situation at around 4.30am on Friday morning, but two helicopters - one of which was understood to be a Sea King from HMS Gannet - subsequently landed at Kames Bay and Ninian Park as armed officers were deployed.
However, they discovered no firearm and arrested the man, who was taken to Saltcoats Police Station for further questioning before finally being released on Monday morning.
Police stated that 'hot weather and too much alcohol' had been contributory factors in the incident. The man is likely to face charges, including an expensive waste of police and helicopter time.
