North Ayrshire and Arran MP Katy Clark has welcomed the Governments announcement that they will set up a supermarket ombudsman to enforce the Groceries Supply Code of Practice.
The announcement follows a recommendation by the Competition Commission to set up a grocery sector body and it is hoped that the code will help strike a balance between farmers and food producers getting a fair deal and the supermarkets offering consumers quality products at affordable prices. A consultation on how best to enforce the code will be launched next month and suppliers are being asked to come forward with their complaints.
Ms Clark said: "This is a very welcome announcement and will help farmers, suppliers, producers and local shops. Supermarkets have enormous power and hopefully a regulatory body will help restore a level playing field."
"However, as with most regulations it is essential that the system used to enforce the rules is strong. That is why it is important that suppliers come forward with their experiences of supermarkets anti competitive practices during the consultation period.
"Research carried out by the Forum of Private Business has suggested that many small and local suppliers may be intimidated by big supermarkets into silence. I would urge suppliers and customers in North Ayrshire to take part in the consultation.
