Bank scam warning from police

Comments (1) | Print | Email

Police have warned the public to be wary after a number of locals have fallen foul of a bank scam involving personal phone calls.

Community constable Alan McPhail stated that phone calls regarding renewal of bank cards were being made to local homes and warned residents, particularly OAPs, not to give out any personal details.

PC McPhail said: "Unfortunately some people have given those details over the phone. There is not a single bank or building society in the country that would phone to ask your details over the phone such as account number and sort codes. It would appear that the elderly are being targeted. The whole thing is a bank scam and I would urge the public to be very careful."

Another 'scam' currently doing the rounds on a similar vein is where you are phoned by a company allegedly representing the council to inform you that you have been paying the wrong Council tax band for a number of years and you are entitled to a rebate. All they need is your bank details to deposit the rebate. They will even quote a couple of digits from your account. I assume this to be local reference numbers. I personally take great pleasure in annoying these folk to the point they hang up but I'm sure some older folk might not find it so amusing. Ask them for a name and number that you can call back, that starts them off.
