SSE has launched a 250,000 community fund linked to the Hunterston offshore wind turbine test facility.

SSE Renewables, the renewable energy development division of SSE, is constructing an offshore wind turbine test facility at Hunterston. Works are being progressed on site with turbine erection planned for September this year.

The facility will be Scotland's first offshore wind turbine test site and will be an extension of SSE's Glasgow-based Centre of Engineering Excellence for Renewable Energy (CEERE). Up to three prototype turbines will be tested at the site for a period of five years.

The Hunterston community fund has an annual value of 50,000 for charitable and community projects in Cumbrae, Fairlie, Largs and West Kilbride. Over the five year lifespan of the project, 250,000 will be invested in local projects in the beneficiary area. The fund will be shared equally between the four community council areas.

The purpose of the fund is to support activities that will enhance quality of life and promote people's well-being; promote community spirit and bring people together; and, foster vibrant, sustainable communities.
