Statistics obtained by the Scottish Conservatives through Freedom of Information show that Councils across Scotland are spending more than £1,600 a day compensating drivers whose cars have been damaged by potholes.
Annabel Goldie said: “North Ayrshire Council has spent over £10,000 in compensation to motorists over the past five years. The state of our roads is matter of real concern for motorists. We need to make sure surfaces are kept in good condition. Investment in roads would reduce the cash paid out to motorists in future. Of course, the true damage caused by potholes is likely to be far higher because many drivers can’t face going through the official channels to try and recoup the money paid for repairs”.
“The Scottish Government could take more of a natural lead in investing properly in our road network and supporting motorists, which would encourage more councils to do the same”.
