A pupil led initiative at Largs Academy for a Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Alliance has been set up on Facebook.

A fourth year pupil has waived his anonymity on the site, and set up the popular Facebook page which is fast gaining support, and has been boosted by assistance from the school.

The alliance group states that it is 'Here we help and support people of all sexual orientations within the school. Anyone can join.” So far, it has amassed 150 members, and Largs Academy have expressed support for the pupil-led initiative.

Entitled Largs LGBTQ Alliance, the website was set up last month, by a fourth year pupil, who stated: “So that’s us reached 150 likes. Thank you so much for the support. I never expected it to go this far in only a couple weeks! I am a fourth year boy and I’m gay. Feel free to share this post and let others know that there are people like them, out there and always willing to help.

“Thanks for understanding and please continue to raise awareness.” The 'News’ understands that when school teachers became aware of the pupil-led initiative, they voiced their support behind the project.

However, the 'News’ understands that the pupil was asked to drop the word Academy from the title of the group.

The teenage organiser held a recent meeting with headteacher Mrs Heather Burns, and said: “The school were all supportive of the idea and even willing to help us out!

“A huge thanks to them for that. And thanks from all of you for all the support, words can’t describe how happy I am to see the page I made get all these likes.” The Facebook page provides cartoons, posters, and general information to provide support, and urges other pupils who may have suffered problems, to feel free and message the page.

The cover photo for the site includes the rainbow flag -sometimes called 'the freedom flag’, which has been popularised as a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) pride and diversity.

A spokeswoman for Stonewall Scotland, the national support group for gay, bisexual and transgender equality, have welcomed the news. She said: “We have heard of some schools doing something similar, but we were not aware of one at Largs. This is good news and we would be happy to provide support towards the initiative, if they would like to get in contact with us.” The Academy have not commented on the formation of the group.
