It’s a special anniversary coming up for the Largs Fun Run, so we turn the clock back 30 years to the very first race on Sunday March 18 1984, and it turned out to be a runaway hit for decades to come.

Finishing a six mile race on piggy back may not confirm with Commonwealth Games rules, but then the Largs Fun Run has never been an ordinary race.

The dynamic duo of T.Wilkie and C.Leck were well ahead of the field when they entered Barrfields Stadium for the final lap.

Just before they reached the finishing line, they stopped, crossing the line by piggy back with a great time of 31 minutes and 30 seconds.

The emphasis was on fun throughout the race which was organised by Largs Round Table to raise funds for the Olympic Appeal and a local charity.

Around 205 men, women and children took up the baton, with a total of 190 of them actually finishing the race receiving a certificate, signed by Torvill and Dean, and a welcome carton of organe juice.

Less than a minute behind the winning duo was veteran runner Bill Stoddart who finished third in 32 minutes and 30 seconds.

Some strange sights were seen along the promenade including Donald Grant of Donald’s Bar begin pushed along in a pram and some exotic runners in fancy dress. The entry for the race was £2, and the six mile route in the town centre and promenade was supervised by police and Largs Round Table members on the day of the event.

Largs Round Table said that the run was a great success, and they had never organised anything like it. The Fun Run has been run by local hairdresser Peter Grant who subsequently joined Largs Rotary and they took over the mantle of organising the event over future years. The 30th anniversary Largs Fun Run will be taking place on Sunday May 4 at Barrfields Park, starting at 10am, registration beginning at 9am. All proceeds go to Largs Rotary charities.
