Hickory, Dickory, Dock... but what has happened to Largs’ famous seafront clock?

For over two months now, the hands have stopped working, and without the familiar chimes from St Columba’s Parish Church, ringing around the seafront, for some local readers it is just not the same.

Fiona McLean said: “It is a lovely main photo of the clock on the Largs News Facebook page, but when is the church clock going to be repaired? its been at 12 o’clock for about 2 months?” According to John Lewis, session clerk at St Columba’s Parish Church, hopefully it won’t be too long.

Having reported the matter to North Ayrshire Council, a repair man from south of the border has visited Largs and assessed the clock mechanism.

“Seemingly it is quite a major report to fix it,” said John, “but a report has been written to North Ayrshire Council to try and push matters forward.” A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “We are aware of the issue with the clock-face and we are now in communication with church representatives in order to facilitate the necessary repair.

“Notwithstanding this, given the specialised nature of the clock, it is estimated that the delivery timescale for the required parts is approximately six weeks.”
