The independence movement is certainly not over - that is the view of Cunninghame North MSP Kenneth Gibson.

The local Scottish Parliament politician said: “The amazing thing is that in the 72 hours following it, 17,000 people have joined the SNP which is quite incredible and not anticipated.

“There are no plans to rerun the referendum but who knows what the future will hold.

“I have been a member of the party for over 35 years and am deeply disappointed but at same time Scotland can draw incredible credit from the way it was conducted, with phenomenal turnouts and the world’s eyes were upon us, and Scotland came out of it very well “We had a tremendous campaign, and we were only 2000 votes behind in North Ayrshire. We won North Ayrshire excluding the North Coast, but even there we received some 41% of the vote.

“I think what is important is that the Westminster party cobbled together the last minute vow to try and head off a Yes victory, and it is now important that we get them to fulfill those promises.

“We are not convinced those promises will be delivered.

Mr Gibson, who is convenor of the Scottish Parliament’s Finance Committee, said: “It is not just about delivering responsibility for expenditure and raising taxes - we also want a share of Scotland’s oil and whisky revenues. What happened the last time something was devolved, it was housing benefit but only 90% of the budget so it cost £400m, and only devolved £360m so had to find £40m from other areas of Scottish budget.

“We don’t want to be hamstrung, we want this to be a genuine devolution of powers, and if so to the betterment of everyone, and it will give us much more responsibility in Scotland, and the more responsibility people have for their own decisions, the better decisions they will make.

“We did more activity on the ground, and the No campaign were relying on big guns, the media and the UK establishment to see them through.

“Nobody gave us a snowball’s chance in hell of getting as close as we did a few years ago.”
