A local events management student will take his place at golf’s Ryder Cup this week, hosting guests and world-famous golfers attending a tournament launch dinner.

The Ryder Cup launch dinner on September 24 at the SECC in Glasgow will be attended by 1500 international guests, including some members of the Europe and America teams.

Robbie Greenfield, 18, from Largs, is part of a group of City of Glasgow College students set to play its part in the latest world-class sporting event to be hosted in Scotland. “It is a brilliant opportunity to gain experience within the events industry as it is one of the biggest events of its kind,” said the former Largs Academy pupil, now a first-year Events Management student.

Elise MacDonald, Director at organiser Lux Events, said: “We are delighted with the support City of Glasgow College have given us and excited to have the events and hospitality students working with us on the evening, to ensure the guests experience the best of Scottish hospitality and the warmest of welcomes!” Gordon McIntyre, Curriculum Head of Hospitality at City of Glasgow College, said: “Although the college has been represented at high-profile events previously, never have we had so many students working at a single event. It will take a lot of work to pull it all together.” Students at City of Glasgow College are also set to work at the Ryder Cup this week by serving VIP guests attending the tournament at Gleneagles. A team of aspiring hospitality professionals from City of Glasgow College will provide a food and drink service at the tented village area adjacent to the world-famous golf course on September 26-28.

City of Glasgow College students have experience of involvement in the running of another world-famous golf tournament, the British Open at Royal Liverpool in July.

Gary Maclean, lecturer in the college’s School of Food Studies, said: “During the summer, six students and I went to work at the British Open, running the Links Pavilion restaurant and being responsible for looking after more than 1000 guests per day. It was an amazing experience for all involved and for students to be at the forefront of this world-renowned event was a pleasure to see.

“The group’s performance made me very proud to say that they were from the City of Glasgow College, and the effort and skills and dedication shown by the team was extraordinary. It also opened up a new experience for the students to see this style of catering and hospitality operation.”
