Children in Largs and surrounding towns are being urged to be take extra care on the roads this winter.

Now the clocks have gone back, and the nights are drawing in, the potential dangers on our roads increases.

Cars might have headlights but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will see you.

So whether you are cycling or simply walking home after a hard day at school, make sure you are visible and easy to see.

The road safety team at North Ayrshire Council visited schools offering advice to provide safety solutions for youngsters.

As well as dishing out reflective gear, so you can been seen from a distance in the dark of night, they provide top tips to make sure you make the most of your equipment.

Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said: “The roads can be dangerous and the need for caution and safety is always paramount.

“But the end of October, when the clocks go back, is always a crucial time and marks a change in our emphasis. Cycling to and from school can be done in the dark now and it’s vital that kids are kitted out correctly.

“Our road safety team are second to none and offer lots of helpful tips which can make it safer for everybody on the roads.” So to stay safe this winter, check out some of our Road Safety team’s top tips: Wear colourful and reflective clothing so the cars can see you coming If you have a backpack, customise it with cool reflective zip clips and stickers.

Before starting your journey make sure you all your lights are working. Test them thoroughly and if they need replacing… replace them first before jumping on your bike.

It’s exactly the same message for people walking or running near dark roads.

So follow these instruction and ensure you are a bright spark this winter.
